Okay, am I the only one who is insulted by anyone who calls werewolves 'lycans'? Sure Underworld was a good movie but I HATE the word lycan, it makes me angry. Lycan is short for Lycanthropy, as everyone knows, and if you look up 'Lycanthropy' in the dictionary, it is not an actual werewolf, it is a disease of the mind that some people have, a delusion that one can turn into a wolf or any other wild animal. It is a sickness, and as any (or most) real werewolves would say: a werewolf's nature is NOT a disease.

A lost soul

Okay, I'm taking this opportunity to try to answer in an exam style. Like a self-debate, I guess.

_____________________________________________________

2 results for "Lycanthropy"

1. The psychological delusion that ones believes he/she is a wolf.

2. The magical ability to transform oneself into a wolf.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Case in point: There are many different possible meanings for a large number of words.

"Asexual"

1.
a. Having no sex or sexual organs.
b. independent of sexual processes, esp. not involving the union of male and female germ cells.

2. free from or unaffected by sexuality: an asexual friendship.

These are very different things. If someone had no feelings for others, and called him/herself "asexual" He/she might well be laughed at beacause people misunderstand what is being said.

"omg" means "Oh my god."

"L337" means "Elite."

Now, I don't know about anyone else, but pointless abbreviations get on my nerves.  It's not like you'd die from exhaustion from just typing in a coupld more letters on the keyboard, etc.

Weighing up both points, the word "Lycan" is short for "Lycanthrope," which means a number of things. I wouldn't approve of being referred to as a "Lycan," but I would be able to choose how to take being called a "Lycanthrope" to my own preference.

the name is not important, it's just a word, it's the thing that  the word is describing that's important.

Well I'm flattered that you remembered the title for the topic Alpha!  However, it seems that it was deleted so I'll just throw in some stuff from that topic and maybe something new.

Lycan, yes it is an abbreviation for lycanthrope who is one with lycanthropy.  Yes the term lycanthropy would medically mean one who is deluded with beliefs that they turn into animals (I think I read somewhere that the wolf wasn't actually the most popular).  But the term goes back farther.

Lycanthropy was originally used for the more mystical definition I believe.  But it was derived from the tale of King Lycaon by Ovid of 8 AD (562 BE).  To summarize, King Lycaon thought he could fool Zeus by feeding him human flesh with Zeus not knowing.  Zeus sees through the trick and because of Lycaon's hubris he is turned into a wolf and will remain so unless he goes a long time without eating a human.

Of course, psychology very often borrows other words for pyschological definitions.  For example, Freud's anal retentive.  It generally describes one with an obsession with minor details (OCD).  Though not necesarily involved with a member of the digestive system, it still keeps that term.  If you're really curious, Freud called it that because he thought that if a child is potty trained too early they become OCD.

Maybe should read this to widen your knowledge!

"A Lycan is a person who has the ability to undergo transformation into a wolf (Lycanthropy), or in more modern uses of the word into any animal form.
In common English, wolf lycans are usually called werewolves and the term lycan is actually quite rarely used. The only more popular mention of the word is in the movie Underworld.

In the Underworld series Lycans were persecuted by Vampires for nearly 1000 years, under the pretext that they were dangerous and wild. The first Lycan was the son of Alexander Corvinus, William Corvinus. His bite was so potent that the first series of Lycans were savage and deadly beasts who could not revert back into their human forms. Their progeny later proved to be more usable to the vampires and were literally branded as subservient "watchdogs" for vampires during the daylight hours when the vampire's bodies were vulnerable to attack. A Lycan slave named Lucian eventually led a rebellion against the vampires in response to the murder of his wife. The daughter of the high-ranking vampire Viktor, she was killed because she was pregnant, and a Lycan/vampire hybrid was seen as an "abomination." In this world it has been explained that Lycans are immortal, just as vampires, often living hundreds of years. It is also explained that the older a Lycan becomes in age, the more control he can exert over his transformation, to the point that he can often change at will, possess full mental control of his wolf-like form and expel deadly silver bullets with muscle strength. To date only one female of the species has been shown (in a brief cameo when Raze brings a dead Trix back to their lair), which some believe indicates that the race is primarily male. (Others theorise that the groups seen in the movies are akin to guerrilla cells and so do not represent Lycan society). As with typical werewolf lore, silver proves to be a poison to the Lycan race"

Underworld rules and so Lycans!!!!!      crazy

I don't like it when people make fun of Faeries, just like Africans don't like to be called the N-word. I understand how you feel, some people call me a 'Jap' from WWII because I'm Japanese. I guess you could say Lycan is rather rude to call someone if they're a Werewolf, what ever floats your boat.

As I have said elsewhere; labels divide people from each other. But they also serve another, more insidous purpose. They limit the labeled as to what they are, what they can be, what they may attain, and what is expected of them. Labels can be good, but most humans lack the maturity to apply them correctly.

All true, but if you see yourself as a werewolf, then I dont see the reason why would you be offended with the lycan word. And word lycan does come from lycantrophy, which is the only correct word to describe someones nature. Therefore, I dont see the reason to get offended. But Im not a lycan, were or whatever....
