bat bat bat bat bat bat

from wikipedia:
Quote
Gothic fashion is a clothing style worn by members of the Goth subculture, known as Goths. It is stereotyped as a dark, sometimes morbid, eroticized fashion and style of dress. Typical gothic fashion includes black dyed hair, dark eyeliner, dark fingernails, black clothes, spiked hair such as Liberty spikes, body piercings such as flesh tunnels, and chains worn as jewelry. Styles are often borrowed from the Elizabethans and Victorians. The extent to which goths hold to this stereotype varies, though virtually all Goths wear some of these elements.

Merely "dressing goth" does not turn a person into goth

....and some people really overdo  ban me

To be Goth, so to speak, must come from the heart, other way you are a bloody poser and you make real Goths look silly and stupid cause of your bloody ... pose... m......f..c
You can find many examples of posing as whatever.... but Goth posers are the worst...

But, there are many who are representing Goth style of living in very pleasant (and other) ways. They are mostly in the music scene. To explaine why is it like that, first you have to know what Goth really is....  To be....

All Goths that I have met are always surrounded by an invisible cloud of such sweet pain and rebel and its like you hear some strange drum beat that makes you wanna dance....

Ok,  focus

Who could be called most Goth than Mr. Nick Bloody Sir Cave!!!

or The Sisters of Unmercy.....

or even maybe M.M.......

or miss Nina Hagen

sooo, I must run now, but Ill be back to your favourite despaire

in the meenwhile... ill be here waiting to hear your taste.

It is attitude more than anything.  Because of where I am in my life now, my velvet is gathering dust.  I no longer dress as a goth, but I still consider myself one.
That can really mess up the posers.  I went to a Gothic shop with my husband to buy him a top hat (like an undertaker type).  In the shop were a lot of young kids (not even college age) in there, dressed to the nines.  My husband and I were in our normal street clothes.  We got stares!  The shop keeper even ignored us, until he heard the conversation we were having about the music playing over the speakers.   Realizing we weren't in the wrong store, he warmed up to us.  The younger kids were still staring at us.  One made a comment about my husband being "too old"  In which my husband said.  "What!?   I'm younger than Peter Murphy!"
You could tell who really was a goth by that comment.  The ones familiar with Bauhaus laughed, the others scratched their heads.

So yes it is attitude.  Not the clothing or the make up.

I dress in black and I still listen to dark and cold wave (among other things) but I don't consider myself as a goth .... I think there are several different styles to be considered in this broad category ....

BTW, do you know any good online shop to buy that kind of stuff ?

I consider myself Goth, but I don't dress as a stereotypical Goth. I dress usually in color combinations that don't really go together, simply because I like the idea that it hurts other people's eyes just to look at me. Serves them right for staring.  guns

Would I be correct to describe the substance of being ''Goth'', as a philosophy more than anything else?

Yes, exactly, it is a state of mind more than anything else. But remember one thing, you are what you wear. So, you can call yourself a Goth if you feel like one,  although if you tend to wear sweat shirts of Banana republic, or the latest houte couture just cause it says Dior on it, well, the point of Goth is I think lost.  Being a Goth represents in all aspects of your life. What you think, wear, what kind of music do you listen, even what books you read and movies you like to watch. It cannot be devided from another, it is your life. It is you.

I agree, but like I said at this point in my life I have no reason to dig out the outfits.  Actually no time is correct.  I could wear the jewelry at work, but it could be dangerous.   But come to my home.  At the entrance is a copy of the stone from the catacombs  which says "Abandon hope all ye that enter here."  Each room has a bit of goth decor.  So I might have no occasion to dress up, but I still am a goth.
For that reason I am jealous of my husband.  He has more opportunities to dig out his outfits.   So when we are together we look really strange.  I usually have my work clothes on, and he is wearing a long coat.
But that's ok I get home, relax listen to some good tunes, read a book, and its alright.
Besides on the occasions I get to dig my outfits out, it makes it even more special for me.

The hard thing is for my youngest.  His taste in clothes are very gothic, but he gets called an emo.   I can tell the difference, too bad the kids in his school can't.

Well, it sure would look strange if a woman in certain age that is supossed to be called serious would dress like that at work. Unless you wanna get fired and pointed at with fingers of hypocrats,True, you dont have to be in black all the time, you have a home that says more than you. And you raised a goth, that is more than just dressing. That is what I meant by being a Goth.

I like that. Thanks! grin

Esspecialy this:

Quote
The gothic sense of humour is highly developed, and often leans toward the satirical. Quietly laughing at the more idiotic and less tolerant factions of society that seem to think yelling out of cars at us makes them cooler. Goths have learned to laugh at themselves and see society in a much different light. They have had to, and it is a trait most would not give up.

as far as being classy while still being goth go's you could just where the more gothic colors. think mrs. adams in my opinion with a little more modernization that is the ideal goth girl look not creepy and evil looking, dark and beauitiful looking. it's still classy but still goth. that's the key i guess.

Not necessary.   I can't have piercings due to my metal allergies.  (I have tried, my ears have 7 holes, but I can't wear anything.)
Go for a look that is you own.  Don't be a direct copy of someone.   And it doesn't necessarily have to be just black.
A few years back, I found at a garage sale an East German military long coat (worn for winter attire) and the matching officer's hat.  I gave them to my husband, because he would like historical aspect.  Being the guy he is.  The hat has now a small half skull at the peak, a black band added to it, and a chin strap.

For me, a lot of my wardrobe is made.  Where we used to live, finding any clothing that wasn't Wal-mart was hard.  So it was common for me to scour garage sales and Goodwill for inspiration.  I have put two different skirts together to make the style I wanted.    I used to go for just black, but I do add some color now.  Usually a deep red or blue.

Just what ever you do make it your own.
