Warner Bros. and Capcom have signed a deal to bring the hit video game “Lost Planet” to the big screen.

Variety reports Warner Bros. will handle worldwide distribution of the film and Capcom will help co-finance it.

David Hayter (who helped pen the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s screen adaptation of "Watchmen") is set to write the screenplay for "Lost Planet." The film is scheduled to be announced today at the E3 game conference in L.A.

Producing duties on the film are set to be handled by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul through Seaside Entertainment.

"Lost Planet" hit store shelves in Japan in late 2006 and arrived in North America in early 2007. The game went on to sell more than 2 million copies, and a follow-up is said to be in the production.

The plot follows an expedition to an ice planet that harbors an energy source with the potential to save mankind.

Capcom is no stranger to seeing its games turned into successful film franchises. The publisher has adapted its hit game "Resident Evil" into three films (a fourth is rumored to be in the works), and is currently teaming with Hyde Park Entertainment for a live action adaptation of "Street Fighter."
