Discuss them here! Describe what the differences are and what you know or have learned about them.
The topics are not limited to those in the title, so feel free to discuss all forms of fay and fay-like being.
Lore, location, appearance, personality, physical attributes, and anything else can be said. And just to get started:
Leprechauns are Irish fay known for their gold and good luck on St. Patrick's Day.
Nymphs are common in Greek mythology.
Dryads are tree fae.
Dwarves are primarily Germanic fae that are short and bearded and drink lots of mead :-D
Elves are nimble and have been portrayed in many ways. Tall and slender with agility like no other to the short Keebler elves that make cookies.
Faeries of all kind are seen as looking many different ways, from those with human-childlike features to the more seducing kind.
I may be right, I may be wrong. Correct or enlighten me if you will :-)
-
What I want to know is where on earth are modern day authors getting their info for these creatures? Pure hogwash if you ask me. :?
-
Dwarves are not Germanic, unless you count Nordic in the generalization of all Germanic Lore.
Dryads are bound to their trees, and live as long as they do, a dryad bound to a Redwood would live awhile, 0_0.
Leprechauns are good luck any day, because they give gold to those with no greed in their hearts.
-
yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy elves
-
but arent leprechauns also known for their propencity for trickery
-
I like satyrs the best.
-
under certain circumstances dryads are able to survive if there tree is destroyed one taking host in a tree were no dryad lived prior or living binded or by some other means magically tied to a preserved piece of wood
-
I AM A RAPIST

under certain circumstances dryads are able to survive if there tree is destroyed one taking host in a tree were no dryad lived prior or living binded or by some other means magically tied to a preserved piece of wood
I didn't know that's what dryads were....... I thought... heh.. well, nevermind that. I just didn't know. :-P
-
uhhhh huuuuuuh kadesh :-D but yes as mathew put it they are just a race of fey it's this is demonstrated in most italian/greek stories of nymphs dryads and oceanides
-
I'm frightened-deathly frightened of Gnomes. I've been petrified of them since my childhood-but I love faeries. I know Gnomes seem harmless but I fear them. It's so stupid, I know. I'm just wondering what more Gnomes actually entail? If they're known for evil or good? I'm assuming good in the opinions of others-but for me I think they're evil. Faeries though are beautiful and sweet and give me a sense of relaxation when I see a picture or drawing of one. I don't understand why I'm so fearful of stupid Gnomes!
-
dont let fae fool you fae, elves, trolls, gnomes, and dwarves all have varying unique personalities they can be good or bad any of them.
-
Gnomes are typically depicted as earth elemental spirits that are custodians of the earth. As far as my admittedly limited knowlede extends, there is little to suggest that they are beings with a fearsome reputation
-
Are dragons part of the fae category? :?
Or are they different completely? & what about orcs? Are they a modern day fictional thing, or do they come from legends & myths as well? :?
-
when i say fae i mean generally things that can travel from realm to realm and are not human, but dragons are not fae they are creatures with high degrees of magical power where as orcs i would have to check on because until the ehole lord of the ringd i think most people would have just called the modern idea of orcs trolls.
-
Ahhhh, okay then. Thanks Levins. :-D
-
no probs
-
Or are they different completely? & what about orcs? Are they a modern day fictional thing, or do they come from legends & myths as well? :?
The idea of an orc as most people know it comes from J. R. R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings series, and all of the myriad media that have been inspired by it.
The word "orc" originally meant a generic ogre/demon/undead creature in Celtic, Germanic, and Nordic myths.
-
That makes sense.
-
has any of you ever meet any of these umm fay fairies etc. watever else there is out there?
-
Nope, I've never met any myself.
But from hearing some of the stuff about them, I'm quite glad. :-P
-
Ive met brownies before a couple of dryad's and once a water sprite, a spirit, and several ghosts but as far as the fey have told me there are trolls, several magical creatures dragons and the like, elemental's, djinn and elves although Ive never heard mention of dwarfs.
-
I sorta think dwarfs & elves were originally the same thing. The only difference were that dwarfs lived in mountainous regions. So modern day writers decided to make them different.
I think I spelled "dwarfs" wrong, but stupid spellcheck keeps telling me that is how it's supposed to be. >.<
-
Nope, you spelled dwarfs right. J.R.R. Tolkein used the spelling "dwarves" in his stories, to seperate his race of mortal creatures from the beings of myth. This spelling has entered popular usage because of the popularity of the Lord of the Rings series, but the former is the correct one.
As for dwarfs and nymphs being the same thing...Many ancient mythologies drew no clear distinction between the many beings of Faerie that we recognize today. The vast majority of the legends concerning faeries come from Celto-Germanic and Nordic myth, and both of those consider dwarves as a type of faerie, and sometimes even consider dwarfs the same thing as elfs.
-
So basically they are all the same type of things, just with certain specialties of magic? :?
-
Yes, there is a little bit of that, but more than anything it's because the words "dwarf", "elf", "fairy", etc. are all particularly ambiguous, and they aren't the words originally used by the cultures that invented those concepts. Also, though in this day and age coherent information is more possible because of the internet, but back then two neighboring tribes might have completely different words for the exact same thing, thus leading to confusion as to what was what.
There is quite a bit of evidence to suggest that fairies/dwarfs/elfs/etc. are all diminutized versions of ancient European nature Gods, that were reduced to the status of minor nature spirits when more anthropomorphic Gods began to be worshipped by the pagan tribes.
-
exactly wat do they look like actually?
-
That question was asked a while back.
Basically:
1. It depends on the exact region you are getting your info from.
& 2. some of the Fae can choose to appear as whatever you wish, so if you have a pre-set idea of what they should be, then they will appear as that.
-
oh
-
Lol, yeah, not the answer that I was expecting either.
-
hahahaha i couldn't really think of anything else to say really *<:) *<:)
-
fae allthough spirits can coelesce into an original form usually under grave circumstances such as if you binded one of them or had some how done some grave ill to them
-
basically thats how you kill them? :?
-
binding no you can bind a fae and some of them wont die some very sensitive spirits cant live n enclosed spaces and i was referring to whar could make a spirit show there true form
-
oh ok umm do you happen to know how to kill one?
-
id have to ask why redeyes???
-
i've always wondered how people would kill fae!! i mean you read how people talk about how to kill werewolves and vampires but you never hear of people talkin about how to kill fae!!! :?
-
Honey, it's cold iron. It's the Fae version of silver to vampire & werewolves. Simple, everyday, bullets from everyday guns should kill them.
However, the best way to protect yourself, is to cary a piece of it on yourself, or have it around your house. That way you don't need to kill them, they'll stay away on their own.
-
oh ok i get it now
-
Haha. Wow. Haha. If a farie tries to sudduse you and you tell her to F off and she gets pissed, what do you do then.
-
Soil yourself with pure terror since the fey can be extremely vicious when their rage is provoked. If folklore has anything to say on the matter, it would suck to be you if you ever were foolish enough to piss one off.
-
I agree with blow fly, Fae are messed up stuff. :-(
-
Ohhhhh crap. Oh well I will have the succubus protect me if she is willing....Wait can a succubus stand up to a fae?
-
theoretically yes depends on the fae but if it was like a pixie The succubus woudl whoop its ass question is how do you plan to control a succubus.
-
hmmm this is all new to me lol
-
theoretically yes depends on the fae but if it was like a pixie The succubus woudl whoop its ass question is how do you plan to control a succubus.
Terror & the succubi are friends, she's a nice one.
-
seriously that is veryyyyyyyy interesting
-
She only feeds on prison mates. And she says I am like a father to her so she doesn't try and sudduse me. And yes it is interesting cause every few min she makes some kind of comment that soon leads to something having to do with sex.
-
*<:) that is interesting
-
The succubus was on South Park. Okay, so that's not my question.. I was wondering if anyone has heard if faeries are a step below angels? I've read things that associated faeries with angels, is this true?
-
I heard one theory that the Fey are angels who sinned, but not bad enough to be "cast down all the leagues to the pits of fire and brimstone" :?
-
Angels are beings that are the direct creation of Judaic theologians while '' the fey'' is a generic term employed to describe various minor spirits that were venerated in Europe throughout the ages prior to the arrival of Christianity. Any comparision between these two starkly opposing sets of entities can be attributed entirely to the endeavours of mediavel Christian theologians who were determined to cast Europe's aboriginal deities and spirit beings in a negative light.
-
Ah, that makes sense. :-)
-
i read somethin like that once but that was a long time ago
-
Ok but let me get this clear...the succubus can defend me right....Cause to tell the truth I dont want a pissed off women comming after me.
-
hahaha i agree with that *<:)
-
Why'd you make her mad in the first place? :?
-
that's exactly wat i want to know
-
She tried to sudduse me, what am I sposed to do let her. Hell no.
-
HELL NO!!!!!
-
She tried to sudduse me, what am I sposed to do let her. Hell no.
Sooo, what? Where you rude to her? Where you polite about it? :?
-
werewolve rude to demon im sorry that just sounds like an arse whoopin
-
Hahaha. I AM NOT A WEREWOLF. Any way....I told her to get the F away from me and leave me alone.
-
I don't know why you turned her down. Last time I checked, you can't get STD's from incorpeal entitites.
-
I cant get an STD cause of my species...But I do love the girl I am with.
-
LOL, I bet u do terror. *rolls eyes with annoyance*
-
if i was in terrors situation i would've done the exact same thing he did
-
Lol, yeah. But showing tact usually helps.
Anyways :focus: please.
-
where exactly do fae come form and where do they originate?
-
As far as I know, they are what I like to call remnants.
They come from an age where humanity was very young, some think they are the watered down myths & legends of ancient gods, others that they are spirit entities of the elements & life.
In any case, in my personal opinion, they are a mere shadow of whatever they truly once where, either gods, or powerful spiritual beings.
-
hmmm interesting!! so where do they live and originate?
-
I saw the Fae again but the succubus was with me....she didnt even try to hurt/suduse me again....NE ways I think they are born like the rest of us.
-
I want to say Europe, but every place has it's own version of them. So I have no clue. :?
The NAME is purely from Europe, that's for sure.
-
do you know anything about fairies?
-
I used to read about them all the time, but the info is blurry now since I stopped.
-
There hot, sexxy, and they get pissed off cause I dont care how sexxy they are cause I am with you.....
-
:@0 you're makin me blush!! have you ever met one regina
-
Nope, I've never met ANYTHING. Not a Fae, were, vampire, or therian.
-
may ask wat you are i mean are you human? sorry didn't mean to make it sound rude
-
Lol, no problem, but yes, I consider myself human in that I am not a were or vampire. But as for anything more than that, I don't know. I could be a therian, or just a person with a psychic talent or something. I honestly don't know. :?
-
*<:) cool!!! wat other creatures are there out there?
-
Lol, too many to list dear. :-D
-
do you know anything about goblins?
-
Sadly, just stuff from modern day fiction. I can try & look them up on Google if you want. :-)
-
goblins or evil fairys there is a commenly misconstruted difference
-
goblins or evil fairys there is a commenly misconstruted difference
So you're saying they are the same thing? :?
-
No I dont think they are....if you take in account that goblins have to make potions to use spells while faries just use their energy.
-
no im just saying there commonly mis identified
-
Ah, okay, my bad Levins. :-D
So what is the proper definition of a goblin? :?
-
Here's a fairly concise definition and description of goblins from our very own Monstrous resources: http://faerie.monstrous.com/goblins.htm
-
Wow, thanks blow fly, I always thought they where a specific subrace, not a generalization.
-
its a pretty acurate although goblins themselves are considered fey there more along the lines of a psychotic brownie with limited magical capabilities.
-
Hmmm, what's a brownie? I know they like to live in houses with people, and love it if you leave them gifts like pans of fresh milk, but that's all. :?
-
Brownies are small usually nude or scadly clothed earth fairys that can serve as an attendant to a home famil or person performing chores and notifying there master kind of like a familiar although have a weird social system in witch gifts and payments are considered grave insults and have some reverse magical connotations
-
Hmmmm, interesting. I want one now!!!! :-D
-
i know we could have them as tiny cute hey chain ornaments or dollies yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy dolls %&$
-
i have never heard of a brownie besides the one you eat lol
-
Lol, I know!!! Oh, wow, are the edible brownies named after the Fae brownies?
You know, like the edible brownies where invented as gifts for the Fae brownies, or something? :?
-
I don't think so. They only accepted offerings of bread and cream. Anything else would offend them.
-
Cool, hey everyone I am back.
-
hi
-
maybe because food brownies are brown and look kind of like dirt, where as fae brownies are earth spirits
-
OMG!!! I never would have made that connection!!!
-
You're both wrong. The name "brownie" for the spirits comes from the English pronunciation of the Gaelic word "brùnaidh".
The brownie dessert is named because of the color.
Simple as that.
-
Wow didnt know that. Yey I learned something.
-
leave it to kreeps to save us all from stupidity
-
Not stupidity so much as ignorance. Although the two might seem indistinguishable at times, there is an important element of difference.
-
i agree now on to the next topic, what are you gyses views theories mad scientific skeems on imps, there relation or confusion with fairy's and how to tell the differences between them
-
"Imp" is just a generic term for a small, mischievous otherwordly thing. Demon, fairy, familiar spirit, whatever. Kind of like "gremlin" and "goblin".
-
now in my experience imps are specifically more keyed down than fairy's or more substantial than a fairy and despite all the beauty of the fae good and bad imps have shown me very ugly angular and crude faces with lack of properly formed bofyparts
-
I'm going to say it again. There is no such thing as an "Imp". The only recorded instanced of imps in any folklore is medieval texts on witches written from a heavily Christian point of view and alchemical texts, which are less than reliable. It's just a generic name for a small and mischievous spirit, similar to "Goblin" (which came from the Old Germanic word "kobold", which were malicious dwarfs)
If I may ask, Levin, how much knowledge do you actually have concerning the spirits from ancient myths that have recently been called by the name "Fae"?
-
Dude, he's SEEN them. I think that's a lot more experience than some texts or myths.
-
i know this question wasn't pertaining to me Mr.Kreepy but the knowledge i know about spirits and stuff like that is really low!! i mean i've read a lot about vampires, fairies, fae, goblins, etc, but i don't know the truth about them!!!
-
Lol, don't worry about it hun, when it comes to the Fae, truth is a VERY blurry thing. :spy:
-
Exactly regina
ANd for kreeps regards I have conducted rituals alongside with fae, conversed with three dryads and several water spirits my knowledge of fae while not vast can at least provides some insite to others.
-
thanks guys!!
-
No problem hun, are you simply curious like me? Or is there another reason why you would like to learn more about them? :? :-)
-
Dude, he's SEEN them. I think that's a lot more experience than some texts or myths.
Are you aware of the nature of Fae?
They think of humans the way we think of animals. No, they think less of us. They will trick and harm humans simply for laughs. The reason I tell him that "imps" are purely a human construct is because if something is appearing to him under the guise of an imp, I think he should really watch his back.
As for his experiences, I refuse to simply take his word for it. As I have found some credibility in claims of the existence of spirit beings I will give him some credit, but you can't expect me to believe based on testamonial alone. Even If he's not lying or insane, the human mind is so strange and complex that it can easily be tricked in its perception of reality.
-
I just realised something. You are basically saying a certain type of Fae isn't real. This MIGHT be true, and it MIGHT piss them off (since you can't honestly talk about Fae and believe that they will just ignore you like some mild mannered school girl) to the point where they will personally pay you a visit.
Yeah, good luck with that Kreepy.
-
Heres my opinions on this matter:
Elves & Dwarves are from Norse Mythology, which was one of the writer of LOTRs whose name I am too lazy to type's influence,
Dwarves were created from the maggots from the flesh of Ymir when Odin & his brothers killed him and made the world, and lived in the underground of Nioavellir, one of the 9 worlds connected by Yggdrasil, and were not described as short until the 13th century (aka 1200s, aka over a thousand years since the you know what), were said to have pale skin and black hair, and were responsible for making most of the god's artifacts like Thor's hammer, Odin's Spear and even Sif's Hair,
Belief in Elves was common among all Germanic Tribes which included the Norse, the were described as human size but incredibally handsome, and important figures could become Elves after Death, they live in Alfheimr which lies in the sky, Alfheimr was ruled by a king, one of which was named Gandalf, the source of the name for the LOTR character,
The modern fantasy Elf & Dwarf are nearly completely based off the LOTR books.
Trolls were also from Norse mythology but occur much later, taking the parts traditionally reserved for other norse creatures including the dwarf and the ice giant (the true name of which is hard to spell so I shall not) they are described as being incredibally ugly (true in modern fantasy) and as being turned to stone by the suns rays (Not true in modern fantasy yet occurs in the Hobbit)
Like has been stated Dryads & Nymphs are Greek in origin Dryads are technically the Nymphs of Oak trees but generally refer to all tree Nymphs, and as a matter of fact do NOT die when their tree is cut down, those are Hamadryads, a subrace, Nymphs are really any female mythological creature tied to a certain feature of the land, Naiad is the proper term for a nymph of water, there are nymphs of water, trees, valleys, clouds, and even the underworld.
Leprechauns are just basic male faerie folk known for being shoemakers other then that I'd say modern fiction is pretty accurate (though truth be told English & Celtic mythology aren't my strong point) though I doubt they are as hmmm. . . mascotty? as in modern interpretation. . .
Faeries or Faerie Folk covers a wide range of mythological creatures primarily from Europe, sort of like a Phylum in scientific classification,
Brownies are small creatures that do not like to be seen, they tend to come out at night to help with work in exchange for small gifts or food like porridge or honey but will tend to leave if the gifts are called payment as that implies a type of master / servent (okay, employer / employee is more acurate but master / servent sounds better) they tend not to talk to people but are quite sociable among their own kind, and I believe offending them some times causes them to turn into a boggart though I can't seem to find the site I learned this from. . .
With the increase in communication the lines between them blurred and they have been predominately groupped in one category due to certain similar charateristics as this thread gives evidence to. . .
You know one of my peeves is when a person (Tolkein in this case) interprets a certain creature in a certain way then the rest of the world takes that as being true without even looking at where that person got their interpretation from, not that it's that person's fault, mainly it the mindless mass we know as human society. . .
For example the Hobgoblin, in modern fantasy it's considered a bigger badder version of the goblin (again partially Tolkein's fault but he tried to fix it so no fault of his) but in actuality it was a smaller and NICE version of the Goblin. . .
Hmmmmm. . . I hope that made sense . . .
IN SUMMARY: The only person who knows what is the true form of something is the person that created it (NOTE: don't take the litterally, okay, don't go looking for some wise and deeper meaing just don't take it as it's litterally written)
And now I have run out of steam so I will push the Post button before this degrades any futher into an incomprehensible pile of gunk. . .
-
Whoa, just took a second look at it and that's one long post and so: *gives whoever read the entire thing a cookie*
-
I read it!!! I read it all!!! Can I have two cookies? ^.^
In Forgotten Realms, and a lot of other modern day works, Trolls are described as kinda dog headed, and can reproduce much like a-sexual plants. Where as if you chop off an arm or leg, they will regenerate, so you have TWO trolls where you once had one. Although they still retain separate genders and can mate to give birth.
Is any of that even true? Or is it pure hogwash? :?
-
mmmmm. . . not hogwash, artistic interpretation, but really the only thing modern trolls have in common with the mythological ones seems to be the name. . .
-
Regina, I'd suggest looking through the Monstropedia article on trolls (http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Troll) and finding out yourself :-)
-
I already know all about them, I was just wondering if the MODERN image of them is accurate. Lol, I AM a bookworm. :-D
But thanks for the offer of help Kreepy.
-
In Norse mythology, they are nowhere near as dim witted as modern fantasy portrays them to be. Instead of being gigantic hulking brutes which are only dimly sentient, trolls in Norse myth are the relations of the dwarves and like their kindred, dwell in fairly advanced socities ruled by kings. Although extremely hideous, they could be shrewd and cunning.
-
I wonder if trolls make good shamans
-
i just want to know more about them!! they interest me
-
Me too hun, I guess this is the best place to ask!!! ^.^
-
well i have know clue and most of the sstuff i find on the web is usewless and whatever i find in books that arent fantasy all i get are larrge cannabilistic grotesque big nosed monsters or giants
-
alot of it i read in books but the rest were on the internet
-
interesting anyone else???
-
Trolls are more common in slavic lands and old places of the world. They are not any stupider than your average human, have thier own language or often speak the local one, theyre average of 9 or ten feet tall. Love meat, people cows horses goats it doesnt faze them. They are actually very good at stone masonry and are ill tempered at the best of times. The only diffrence is Japanses Oni who are very smart trolls indeed but not related to thier European counterparts. They are very hard to kill and have thick skin. The only way I managed to kill on in Bosnia was to stab its eyes out and cut its throat. Then I burnt it to make sure. Thankfully due to me and my kins efforts there are very few left.

So… basically you killed a sentient being whose only offense to you was its very existence? Again, how mighty white of you… You remind me of the Klan and other various hate groups. In fact, your reasoning and logic behind your actions is very much like theirs.
This being the case, I have to assume that…
A) You were born –and raised in – a shack in some god-forsaken backwoods hicktown in West Virginia (My deepest apologies to all members from this area… I don’t intend to make you look bad.) and at some point was moved to the Deep South, where your uncle introduced you to the family secret… and then to the Klan or Aryan Nation or some other group of morons.
OR
B) There is no danger of you reproducing because you’re too lost in WOW to find a real girlfriend.
Whichever is the case, it doesn’t matter – you lose.
-

Oh how I wish I could do that to the latest troll to plague the lands of Monstrous.

Does moloch mean World of Warcraft perchance? :-D
Speaking of video games, i wonder if any of the big gaming companies'll introduce a mmorpg with a "protect the species" theme :-D

Moloch, I'm from West Virginia. In my tiny little town, he'd be murdered in the most gruesome way possible for his idiocy. My area of West Virginia generally prides itself on having highly intelligent and kind people. He may, however, fit in to the southern part of the state or the psychotic uber-religious town next to me. Wait...that means he might live near me.... :-(

Yes I did, Raziel.

For your sake, Amaya, I certainly hope he lives nowhere near you; because that would mean he was near me too... as I'm not much more than a stone's throw from West Virginia myself.... and some of you know better than most what I might do...

Ah, but let's get :focus:

How dull being compared to an American.
-
How dull being compared to an American.
How dull... being Nagt Jagter.
How dull... being a WoW failure.
How dull... being paranoid schizophrenic who can't even come up with a decent reality to hallucinate about.
I can come up with more... feel free to ask, lol.
-
Baaaaaaaaaack to topics please. I really don't want this thread to go to waste :|
-
HAhahaha fine fine as long as your not comparing me to Americans go ahead..... :-D :-D :-D

Hey Daemonin, I knew M back when he was still here, and I know it'd break his heart to see what this thing did to his thread. Could you lock it please, before it's ruined any further?

Sorry, Daemonin, I know you don't want this thread to go to waste. But he really made me sick (trying not to offend him) :x

Can do.
