Title: Abbadon and Belial
Post by: jordyn on October 31, 2012, 08:56:28 AM
So, in most of the movies i watch dealing with devils, demons and the sort these seem to be the most commonly used, I like belial. He pretty much represents a lot of my vices and i suppose i can see how he's the popular "possession" devil. Most movies dealing with possession bring him in as the main antagonizer, but what he generally represents are the backdoors of the human psyche most seem to use to slip in and take over.

Abbadon i don't know much about, but all the shows and movies seem to have him as the devil who wants to take over the world, destroy humanity and make it a devil's paradise, a few are fantastic and a couple were pretty awful, but i do love my devil movies.

The question is why would of all the demons, devils and evils in this world these two are most used, most "feared" and most glamorized by hollywood?

An interesting topic so i had to look up what the 2 were myself here is what wikipedia says,

In Revelation 9:1-11, Abaddon is described as a personified star who falls to Earth from heaven and is given the key to open the bottomless pit. Abaddon opens the pit, releasing a swarm of locusts.
Abaddon is also described in the same passage as "The Destroyer",[6] the angel of the abyss,[6] and as the king of a plague of locusts resembling horses with crowned human faces, women's hair, lions' teeth, wings, iron breast-plates, and a tail with a scorpion's stinger that torments anybody that doesn't have the seal of God on their foreheads for five months.[7

In The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness,[19] one of the Dead Sea scrolls, Belial is the leader of the Sons of Darkness:
But for corruption thou hast made Belial, an angel of hostility. All his dominions are in darkness, and his purpose is to bring about wickedness and guilt. All the spirits that are associated with him are but angels of destruction.

not sure if this is what you were searching for though.

Actually it is, and that makes sense.

There are others i think could be used though to make a more original story, Azazel is another one of my favorites and i think with his associations as a scapegoat and vanity would work well with out society today. Here's what Enoch has to say about him.

"“And Azazel taught the people (the art of) making swords and knives, and shields, and breastplates; and he showed to their chosen ones bracelets, decorations, (shadowing of the eye) with antimony, ornamentation, the beautifying of the eyelids, all kinds of precious stones, and all coloring tinctures and alchemy.” – 1 Enoch 8:1"

with the rise in vanity, i'd dare say he's perhaps even more influential over our society these days, with the rise in beauty products, even for men it'd be an interesting twist to the usual possession or destruction of the world that seems to be so overdone. Not to mention the fondness today's society seems to have for finding scapegoats to deal with their issues.

"Leviticus 16:8 tells that the Lord ordered his high priest, Aaron, to ‘place lots upon the two goats, one marked for the Lord and the other marked for Azazel’ on the Jewish Day of Atonement. The goat designated by lot for the Lord is to be used as a sin offering, while the goat designated for Azazel “shall be left standing alive before the Lord, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness for Azazel.” (Lev 16:10) Aaron was to “lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their sins, putting them on the head of the goat; and it shall be sent off to the wilderness through a designated an. Thus the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness.” (Lev 16:21-22) Leviticus also says that “He who set the Azazel-goat free shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may reenter the camp.” (16:26)"

It'd make a more interesting story then blaming it all on violent television and video games.  ;)
